Q. I have been pondering Saturn coming into Sagittarius in 2015 and many of my tarot readings and horoscopes are telling me that something to do with children/professional life with youths etc between 2015 and 2017 and that I should be aware that Saturn in Sagittarius will be ‘unforgiving’. What I’ve read about Saturn in sag. is that it often denotes a crash of some kind?? And on my natal chart, Saturn is in my 10th house. Could you help interpret what having Saturn in my 10th means, especially in a period with Saturn in Sagittarius in 2015-2017. And does it mean that I should be aware of a negative impact if for example, I am trying to have children or I am starting to work with children in a professional capacity??
A. First of all, you need to be aware that in astrology, like most things, you’re going to get a wide variety of opinions, viewpoints, accuracy and depth in the way people write, and in particular about Saturn. Certainly, as the Lord of time and a deliverer of karma, he can dish out some hard and sometimes harsh lessons, particularly in areas we’re we are unconscious. But as Liz Greene wrote in her classic book Saturn: A New Look at an Old Devil, it is more often our interpretations and projections about Saturn that are the problem than the archetype itself. So, careful what you read!
I tend to see him as a teacher of healthy realism, of tough love, who will show up our faults, insecurities, delusions, projections so that we’re more conscious, can take responsibility for working with them and in doing so, strengthen ourselves from within. He will not protect us from failure if that what is needed to wake us up and he fully understands that we need to have certain experiences, no matter how painful, in order to truly “grow up” psychologically, to mature on every level, in order to get to where we need to go. If we are off track, he will give us a hard time and where we are in true alignment with ourselves and our world, he will be one of the best inner allies we can have. Along the way, we will come to know our own truths and wisdom, sorted apart from our conditioning and be able to create a life that is more of a reflection of our essential selves and based on a deepening sense of our own authority.

Your Saturn in Sagittarius in the10th House means that so you’re coming into your first Saturn Return, one of the most significant turning points at this stage in your life and one that will effect every part of your world, but specifically target your house of career. By transit he has been in this house since October 2012, applying his intense focus to your career culminating in the peaks of the return in January to May and October/November 2015 (From then he goes fully into your 11th House for the following 3 years but that’s another story)
Having Saturn in both Sag and the 10th means that the sign and your career path initially suffer from various inner and outer obstacles, from absorbing both positive and negative conditioning from family, early authority figures and society in general, all of which make you feel less than capable and has you working very hard to make your way. The traditional interpretation is that it takes individuals longer to establish themselves professionally but when they get there, they discover that despite the old feelings of inadequacy, they are actually very, very good at what they do! Part of this is because they’ve worked hard to learn and to overcome their inner obstacles and, because they’ve found more of their own authority and authenticity in the process. People with Saturn in the 10th eventually become figures of real authority in their fields and if they’ve done the necessary inner work to soften their edges, deeply loved and respected leaders and mentors.
The Saturn Return is a challenging time because when we are in our twenties we naively think we’re adults but in truth is most of us are either run by our conditioning and/or are attempting to run away from it. On the basis of that conditioning we create all sorts of structures in our world but, depending on how really conscious we are, when the Saturn return starts to warm up, we slowly wake up to the fact that significant parts of our world don’t actually suit or serve us because they are based on other people’s belief systems that we absorbed as children.
One of the reasons why the return has such a dreaded reputation is that things start to leave our lives at this point, careers and relationships being prime targets. As a rule of thumb though, anything that leaves your life has become redundant and an expression of the conditioned self that you are starting to leave behind.
Whereas if you are basically on track, then you get supported to really build on that with greater focus, dedication, professionalism and discipline. Saturn will still test you out but in ways that supremely appropriate for firming up both inner and outer structures, setting the stage for the next 30 year cycle.
Your Saturn is actually very well placed, with little but good aspects to other parts of your chart. It has to be said that there is little in your Saturn that speak of not being a good parent or teacher (in fact Saturn in Sagittarius is a brilliant position for a teacher, facilitator or guide once you get over your own fears. There are major challenges in your 5th House of the child though but these have to do with a Black Moon, Chiron, Hygeia conjunction there in Gemini)
Saturn in Sagittarius means that the free spirit that is the Centaur, with all is fire, passion and joy has been severely dampened down through various early pressures (and older karmas) But the spirit of adventure, the love of learning and travel, the desire to understand the interconnectedness of life and to find meaning in all experiences is irrepressible and eventually bursts out from beneath the conditioning. The paradox with Saturn is that while he delivers that conditioning, he is also a guide to unravelling it! The Saturn Return is one of those times.
What I suspect that the tarot and other sources are pointing towards is when Saturn travelling through your 11th House, still in Sagittarius, opposes the Black Moon, Chiron and Hygeia conjunction in your 5th House in December 2016 and January 2017. This conjunction reflects both the inner child within yourself and your relationship with outer children and is the source of your deepest wounds, some of your darkest places and, an extraordinarily powerful fountain of healing and psychospiritual power.
If you manage not to do any deep healing between now and then, I would be seriously worried, because Saturn would have to show you the consequences, the hard reality of that. But you’re being given advanced warning, because if you do the deep work, take the path of the Wounded Healer, the same transit can be a time of really claiming this power inherent in you, as well as furthering and deepening your own healing.
The conjunction is a combination of Kali/Durga, the guru of the centaurs Chiron and the goddess of miraculous healing Hygeia. There’s a lot of work to be done there to bore through the layer of wounding but, energies that have been contaminating and sabotaging of your life can turn to becoming your greatest gifts as a gifted healer/teacher and potent advocate for the sacred feminine.
I recommend consistent and deep therapeutic and spiritual work, things like primal therapy, kundalini yoga and dance, goddess work (check out Awakening Shakti by Sally Kempton), all of which will not only work on this conjunction but also lift the lid off your Saturn in Sagittarius.
Go well and go for it
