Q:  I have always been interested in mysticism and the esoteric. I have Mercury in an Aquarian 10th house stellium. Mercury is at the midpoint of the asteroids Shiva and Kaali. Both asteroids and Mercury square Neptune and Neptune is square the nodes. The South Node conjuncts Shiva. Is my chart telling me that this is a past life experience or is it telling me to use these gifts in this life?

A:  Both! Having these two on your South Node points to at least one or a number of significant past-life experiences working with Shiva and Kali energies, an obvious connection with India and Hindu culture and, at a soul level you have a very deep sacred marriage already existing in your psyche.

Anything on the South Node speaks of gifts, knowledge and abilities gathered over lifetimes that we have bought in to work with and bring into this lifetime. However the karmas behind these placements are always a mix of good and difficult ones, reflecting the positive and negative use of the same energies in different past-life scenarios. So alongside the gifts comes intense work and experiences to rebalance karmic debt, to purify the energy so that we can bring them through safely and with great self-responsibility.

And obviously with archetypes like Shiva and Kali, the god and goddess of the cycles of death, destruction, transformation and rebirth, we had better know how to handle their energies well!

For instance, Shiva is an extraordinary image of the sacred masculine, a mixture of the perfectly detached yogi, the wild man who hangs out with ghosts and animals, the co-patron of tantra and who is intimately connected to the sacred feminine through the cobras around his body, the Moon by his head and the Ganges flowing from his locks. He is found in many cultures as the priest, the sacred warrior, the medicine man who can handle great sacred power and direct it well for their communities.

His shadow though is found in the Nazis, Islamic State, most dictators and in fundamentalists of all persuasions who wield his power destructively (and create more horrific karma for themselves!)

Similarly with Kali, who in her pure form is the mysterious dark face of the Great Mother, all-pervasive and all-loving, of the void, of birth and death, a liberator of the deepest spiritual power and mysteries, an awakener of Kundalini and the secrets of tantra.

However, if she gets rejected or dishonoured, she shows us her demonic form and even the great Shiva gets scared. In her mythology she was created to destroy the demons of the mind and the ego who threaten the natural balance of the world but occasionally gets lost in her own bloodlust and wreaks havoc in all the worlds.

Getting back to your own chart, the squares to Neptune alone points to the misuse of these powers which manifests as the energy coming out in slippery distorted forms, their power initially anaesthetised and watered down, while messing with your professional life, physical and psychic health and with your relationships.

But all this are expressions of their distorted forms and can, and for you, must be worked with for you to have the soul-infused life you are meant to lead. It requires a program involving past-life regression, working directly with the lower chakras and with your primal emotions, with purifying the toxic remnants from these past-life residues and with fully reclaiming both sacred masculine and feminine.

I strongly recommend you get a copy of Sally Kempton’s book Awakening Shakti both for her brilliant descriptions of the mythology and yogic psychology of Kali and for the meditations, mantras and visualisation for connecting with her more deeply.

With the Shiva energy, you need to work with any excessive detachment in your system. That all this is in Aquarius points out that while you are essentially brilliant intellectually and spiritually, some of the negative karma was created by being too emotionally disconnected from the real consequences of your actions in some past life scenarios.

Similarly with the multiple squares with Neptune, too much upper chakra focus in your spiritual practices will collude with unconsciously escaping from the deeper emotional realms of Kali and constitute a dishonouring of her intelligence and power. Not a good situation to be in!

You also know that the healing Kundalini goddess Hygeia is right next to Kali as well, adding an even greater range of skills to the list. She is connected with the lovely goddess Lalita, goddess of sacred sexuality, another face of Kali and consort of Shiva

I would also encourage you to explore tantra both as inner practice and in your relationships (most of which will feel very familiar) and it is my hope that you connect with a master in any of the Kundalini and Shiva/Shakti traditions. Getting to India if you haven’t already would be very powerful for you too.

Ultimately though one of your core soul purposes is to bring this awesome combination into your professional life and see it flow out into all parts of your world. It is sacred work that you were born to do.
